Mining sites need more than a generic seal. Heat, dust, vibration, remote locations and frequent handovers all affect performance. The right choice depends on the asset, the risk level, the closure point and how the serial number will be recorded in the site's chain-of-custody process.

Best security seals for mining: match the seal to the risk

Security seals are tamper-evident devices, not substitutes for a lock, restricted access procedure or security patrol. Their value is accountability. A uniquely numbered seal establishes that an item was secured at a defined time and allows the next authorised person to check whether it has been opened, substituted or interfered with.

For mining operations, selection should begin with the consequence of unauthorised access. A seal on a stationery cupboard and a seal on a high-value parts cage should not be specified the same way. Consider the likely attack method, whether tools may be available, how long the asset will remain unattended and whether the seal must withstand outdoor exposure.

A useful specification also considers human factors. If a seal is difficult to fit while wearing gloves, or its numbering is too small to read in low light, teams may bypass the procedure. A suitable mining seal must be secure enough for the application and simple enough to use consistently on every shift.

Cable seals for high-value equipment and secure enclosures

Cable seals are often the preferred option for equipment cages, tool cribs, generator compartments, valves, meter boxes, transport cases and high-value parts storage. Their adjustable steel cable can pass through irregular or widely spaced locking points, making them more versatile than fixed-length seals.

For higher-risk applications, select a cable seal with a strong locking body, galvanised or non-preformed steel cable, clear laser-marked identification and visible evidence of cutting. Cable diameter matters. A thinner cable may suit low-risk utility access and tighter apertures, while a heavier cable provides greater resistance where bolt cutters or deliberate interference are credible risks. The trade-off is that heavier cable seals can require more space and a purpose-made cutter for authorised removal. Confirm that supervisors have the right tool and a documented process before deployment.

Bolt seals are designed for high-security applications involving shipping containers, intermodal freight and road transport doors. Bolt seals are not appropriate for every closure. They only work where door hasps or locking points are correctly aligned, and they are generally single-use. The adjustable tail allows the seal to fit a range of closure sizes. For field use, choose a seal with a metal locking jaw where additional pull resistance is required, a long flag for readable serial numbers and a smooth tail that will not catch on gloves or equipment.

Plastic seals should not be selected merely because they are inexpensive. A light-duty seal may be appropriate for showing that an emergency cabinet has been opened, but it is not a credible control for a fuel tank, high-value stock cage or remotely located equipment compartment. The seal should reflect the consequence of a breach, not just the size of the opening.

Padlock seals for cabinets, panels and restricted access

Padlock-style seals are practical for applications with a padlock eye or latch where a pull-tight seal cannot be threaded. They are commonly used on switchboards, control cabinets, electrical panels, utility boxes, lockers and smaller restricted-access enclosures.

Their main advantage is convenience. Staff can quickly apply a visible tamper-evident closure without carrying keys or managing a reusable padlock register. They also give inspectors a clear visual check during rounds. For exposed locations, confirm the seal material is suitable for UV exposure and the expected temperature range.

Tamper-evident labels, tape and bags for samples and documents

Mining security is not limited to plant and freight. Ore samples, laboratory submissions, assay documentation, chain-of-custody forms and small components can be vulnerable to loss or substitution. Tamper-evident bags, labels and tape provide a controlled closure for these smaller but operationally important items.

A bag with a sequential number and write-on panel can support sample identification from collection point to laboratory. Tamper-evident tape or labels can reveal a void message or surface disturbance when removed, making them useful for cartons, electronics cases and document packages. Their performance depends on the substrate: dusty, wet, textured or oily surfaces may reduce adhesion, so test the product on the actual packaging used onsite.

Specify for site conditions, not catalogue photos

A security seal that performs well in a clean warehouse may not perform the same way at a Pilbara iron ore operation, an underground hard-rock mine or a Queensland coal site. Exposure conditions should be part of procurement specification.

Check whether the seal needs UV resistance for extended outdoor use, sufficient temperature tolerance near processing areas, chemical resistance around fuels or lubricants, and markings that remain legible after dust and weather exposure. Colour can assist visual management, such as assigning one colour to maintenance isolation checks and another to outbound freight, but colour alone is not identification. Every operationally significant seal should carry a unique serial number, barcode or other traceable marking.

Custom printing can add site names, asset categories, instructions or branding. It is useful where seals are applied at scale or where contractors need immediate direction. It should complement, not replace, unique numbering. A repeated company name does not establish which specific closure was applied to a particular asset.

Build seals into the chain of custody

The strongest seal becomes ineffective when nobody records the number or checks it at the next handover. A workable control procedure is usually straightforward: inspect the closure before sealing, record the serial number against the asset or consignment, identify the person applying it, then verify the number and condition before acceptance or opening.

For critical assets, record exceptions. If a seal is missing, cut, incorrectly numbered or visibly damaged, the receiving person should quarantine the item where appropriate and escalate under the site's incident process. Avoid treating broken seals as routine maintenance issues until the reason has been established.

Digital records can improve speed where there are many movements or remote handovers. Barcode-enabled seals and mobile scanning reduce transcription errors, while smart cargo monitoring devices can add location, movement and environmental visibility for selected consignments. Physical seals and monitoring technology serve different purposes: one provides visible tamper evidence at a closure point, while the other can provide broader transit intelligence.

Before standardising a seal, procurement and operations teams should confirm the asset being secured, the required deterrence level, the diameter or size of the locking aperture, the exposure environment and the expected removal method. They should also identify whether a unique serial number, barcode, custom print or colour coding is required.

Requesting samples is sensible for new applications. Test application with gloves, confirm the seal fits the actual hardware and check whether staff can read and record the number under site conditions. This small trial can prevent a costly rollout of a seal that is technically suitable but impractical in the field.
