A roll cage can leave a depot fully loaded and arrive at the receiving point with no obvious sign of interference - unless the access points were properly secured. Knowing how to secure roll cages is not simply a matter of fitting a lock. It requires the right closure method, a documented seal process and handling controls that make unauthorised access visible before stock is accepted.
For Australian transport, retail, healthcare, manufacturing and facilities operations, roll cages often carry high-value, sensitive or time-critical goods. They move through loading docks, cross-docks, vehicles, storage areas and receiving bays, where multiple people may handle them. Start with the roll cage and the risk
Not every roll cage needs the same level of security. A cage carrying empty cartons on a short, supervised internal run has a different risk profile from one carrying pharmaceuticals, electronics, cash-related materials, confidential records or controlled stock through a third-party transport network.
First, inspect the cage itself. Check that the doors close squarely, hinges are intact, locking bars engage correctly and the mesh has not been damaged or cut. Cable seals for higher-risk movements
When the cage carries valuable stock or will move through multiple locations, a cable seal can provide a more substantial physical barrier. Select a cable diameter and length that suit the cage's closure points, and ensure the cable cannot be slipped over the top of a locking bar or through an oversized gap.
Cable seals may require cutting tools at destination, so receiving teams need a safe removal procedure. They are best suited to workflows where the added security and controlled removal process outweigh the extra handling time.
Apply seals consistently at dispatch
The seal itself is only one part of the control. Inconsistent application is where many otherwise sound processes fail. Dispatch staff should load the cage, close both doors, engage the locking bar and test the closure before applying the seal. A quick pull on each door confirms that the seal is securing the actual access point, not merely sitting beside it.
The seal number should then be recorded before the cage leaves the secure area. This can be done on a delivery docket, manifest, warehouse management system or mobile proof-of-delivery process. At minimum, the record should identify the cage, the seal number, date and time of dispatch, origin, destination and the person or team responsible for sealing it.
Where goods are especially sensitive, photograph the closed and sealed cage at dispatch. It should support, not replace, the written or digital seal record.
Do not reuse single-use security seals. Once removed, they should be cut or broken and disposed of. Reuse destroys the audit trail and creates an obvious opportunity for substitution.
Secure the cage in the vehicle as well
A sealed cage protects access to its contents. It does not secure the cage against movement during transport. This distinction matters.
Roll cages must be restrained in the vehicle using an appropriate load restraint system, such as rated straps, load bars, tracks or other equipment suitable for the vehicle and load. Follow your transport procedures and applicable load restraint requirements. Cages that shift, tip or strike each other can damage stock, deform locking points and compromise the seal before delivery.
Keep the heaviest cages low and stable, avoid overloading shelves, and ensure doors face a protected direction where practical. If a cage has removable shelves or loose items, use inner packaging, stretch wrap or tamper-evident bags as needed. A seal on the outer door will not prevent damage caused by poorly packed contents.
Build inspection into every handover
The receiving team should inspect a roll cage before signing acceptance. Check that the serial number matches the dispatch record, the seal is intact, the closure points are undamaged and there are no signs of cutting, stretching, melting, replacement or forced entry. Look beyond the seal itself: damaged mesh, distorted hinges and unsecured roof panels can also indicate interference.
If the seal is intact and the number matches, the cage can be opened under the site’s normal receiving process. If the seal is missing, broken or does not match the documentation, treat the cage as an exception. Photograph its condition, retain the seal or fragments where safe to do so, notify the relevant supervisor or security contact, and check the contents with a witness where required.
A broken seal is not automatic proof of theft. It may result from vehicle movement, poor placement, accidental handling or a process error. However, it is a clear signal that chain-of-custody control has been interrupted. The response should be consistent, documented and proportionate to the goods involved.
